The research and transfer institute fortiss, associated with the Technical University of Munich, is dedicated to closing the oft-bemoaned gap between academic research and industry in the sector of embedded systems. fortiss is a non-profit company that works in close cooperation with industry partners and research institutions in the fields of integrated, embedded software systems.
fortiss is organised into the four divisions of Software & Systems Engineering, Cyber-Physical Systems, Information Systems, and Industrial Automation. The 120 employees of fortiss research topics from the applied domains of electromobility, automation technology, and smart grids. More information is available on the Internet at www.fortiss.org. In the SADA project, fortiss focuses primarily on developing appropriate algorithms for data fusion, as well as a run-time system for data exchange.
NXP Semiconductors Germany GmbH (part of NXP Semiconductors N.V., NASDAQ: NXPI) develops solutions that create secure connections in a smart world. Building on its expertise in the high-performance mixed signal area, NXP drives forward innovations in the automotive, identification, and mobile electronics industries and in the following fields of application: wireless infrastructure, lighting, healthcare, industrial and entertainment electronics, and computer technology. A company with a global scope and branches in more than 25 companies, NXP generated revenue of $4.82 billion in 2013.
Based in Hamburg, he automotive division comprises all functions including management, marketing, design and product development, and preparation for testing and manufacture. This division provides leading networking solutions for smarter vehicles and protects vehicle data and communications systems against illegal attacks. Key elements in its portfolio are vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, data reception via digital radio standards such as DAB+ and HD radio, solutions for on-board electrical systems, highly integrated radar systems, keyless entry and immobilisers, sensors, and Power MOS. NXP is also a leading automobile supplier in the fields of automotive logic, screen drivers, interface products, and discrete small-signal semiconductors. For system solutions for various applications, NXP has developed technologies and libraries that are ideally suited to the automobile market. Their project participation will create an RF CMOS technology that will ensure maximum integration in the smallest possible area with low power consumption.
In addition to Hamburg, NXP also performs development operations in Dresden, where the emphasis is on software and algorithm development.

The German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), with sites in Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, Bremen (with an associated branch in Osnabrück) and a project office in Berlin, is the leading German research institute in the field of innovative software technology. In the international scientific community, DFKI ranks among the most recognised "Centres of Excellence" and currently is the biggest research centre worldwide in the area of Artificial Intelligence and its application in terms of number of employees and the volume of external funds.
DFKI projects cover the whole spectrum from application-oriented basic research to market and client-oriented design of product functions. More than 60 spin-off companies have created more than 1,500 highly qualified jobs.
The DFKI Robotics innovation Centre (RIC) in Bremen has played a leading role in various projects sponsored under the “Electromobility Model Regions” programme run by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building, and Urban Development (BMVBS) since 2009. These activities have included multi-year field trials in which vehicle and user data from electric vehicles is gathered and analysed. DFKI is responsible in this consortium for the structure and operation of the database backend and the use of data fusion, data mining, and cluster analysis methods to analyse the data. Additional areas of emphasis for RIC are in the development of autonomous or driverless vehicles and the design of innovative electric vehicles. www.dfki.de/web
